"Höchst: Small Porcelain Jug With Putti Decoration, 18th Century"
HÖCHST, German manufacture, Hesse, circa 1770. Lovely small jug and white porcelain lid with central decoration of a polychrome cartouche, representing an animated scene of putti having lunch outside, in the spirit of François BOUCHER 1703-1770) .Three in number, these cherubs are delighted with delicacies of an assortment of fruits, outdoors in a wooded and cloudy landscape.
The Höchst factory was founded in 1746 under the protection of Johann Friedrich Karl von Ostein, Archbishop of Mainz, making it the second oldest porcelain factory in Germany. During the French invasion in 1794, under General Custine, the factory closed.
Höchst mark painted in underglaze blue below: "Wheel with 6 spokes of Mayence"
