The painter captures in full action a peasant busy hoeing a piece of his field. The sloping ground does not facilitate its work. He relaxes by smoking a pipe. Below we can see the village. The scene is certainly located in the Moselle valley around Sierck-les-Bains.
René Louis Vauquelin was a pupil of Lequen. He started at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1879 and exhibited there regularly.
