(58 years old) Appointed official painter of the navy in: 1921. Eugène-Louis GILLOT shows himself perhaps closer to the great English watercolorists before Delacroix and to Turner's dazzles than to the analysis of optical sensations advocated by the French impressionists. Canvases and watercolors give the sensation of a thing seen, quickly and spontaneously fixed: in fact, Gillot knows the art of indicating, in a composition which appears diffuse and free, the essential points which give it its order and which retain the 'Warning. He first practices engraving, brushes poster projects that demonstrate both his sense of efficient layout and that of economy of means. He met Baron Dard very young, who bought him most of his paintings and watercolors. When the patron dies, Mme Dard installs him in her castle in Osmoy. The painter often goes to England, and it is believed that it was during his first stay in London, in 1903, that he had Turner's revelation: his landscapes turned towards the light, thus affirming the tendencies that he had already been demonstrating since his trip to Venice in 1897. In 1911, he was called to the English Court to immortalize the Coronation of George V and the Naval Review that followed; during the trip which brought the sovereign and Queen Mary to Paris, Gillot was part of the official suite. In the Bois de Boulogne or in Hyde Park, on the quays of the Seine or the Thames, the painter captures the multicolored crowds, the games of the sun in the mist and smoke, the tumult of funfairs, the bustle of the ports. After the war, Gillot was drawn to the circus and music hall scenes, his palette increased by a few tones to sacrifice chromatic nuances for decorative lyricism. Founder with Charles Fouqueray of the National Society of Fine Arts of the Sea, official painter of the Navy, it is in this capacity that he went to New York in 1923. Gillot also left a large number of seascapes . The death of Baroness Dard in July 1925 made him heir to a considerable fortune which he would only use for a few months ”. Gérald Schurr His work is classic with touches of impressionism. The English pay him the best homage by saying that he is the French Turner.
