Ernest Lawson, an American impressionist painter, belonged to the group of "Eight", an association of artists whose underlying motivation was to protest against the restrictive academicism of the powerful and influential National Academy of Design.

A painter of mainly landscapes, his style was inspired by the French Impressionnist Alfred Sisley and the American painter Twatchman. He adopted a technique in which the brushstroke was thick and nervous, and used chalky colours.

He chose to spend the end of his life in Florida, near Miami, a place that inspired him to paint many scenes of beaches and views of the mangrove.

He disappeared under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea.
