Hjalmar Sandberg's artistic career began when he worked in a shop that sold materials to students at the Academy of Fine Arts. Sandberg had no art education and had to teach himself; he often chose intense colours and confident brushstrokes. The art students saw his great talent, and Carl Larsson took him to Paris one year after this painting was made.
He spent the entire summer of 1877 painting landscapes of Barbizon. His most tremendous success as an artist was in connection with the Paris World's Fair (Exposition Universelle) in 1878, when the jury considered him worthy of a medal.
Due to his early death, production became fragmentary. In addition to the world exhibition, he participated in the Paris Salon in 1879, the Nordic art exhibition in Copenhagen in 1883 and the Art Academy's exhibition in 1885. Sandberg is represented in many collections such as the National Museum in Stockholm, Norrköping Art Museum and Linköping Museum.
