Italian Master of Emilie
late 16th century
Oil on the table
Measures cm. 31 x 43
An extremely delicate representation of a young Virgin praying which perfectly reflects the refined taste of the 16th century Emilian school
Painted in oil on a poplar table is in very good condition without restoration and pictorial retouching.
The board is in one piece without cracks with a slight curvature.
It is a very pleasant and charming work. This image of the Virgin is very interesting, and will be used in the 17th century for the representations of Madonnas in adoration of the Child and many other works by Gian Battista Salvi said "Sassoferrato". In fact the back of the table bears an old erroneous attribution to Salvi. This is not possible because Sassoferrato and his workshop painted on canvas. The paintings on Emilian panels are earlier.
