Charles VALTON (1851-1918) "The slab of the stag". TEST in bronze with brown patina signed on the terrace. Base in veined green marble. Charles Valton was born in Pau in the Pyrenees, but grew up in Paris where he regularly attended the Jardin des Plantes to study animals. Admitted to the École des beaux-arts de Paris, he studied with Antoine-Louis Barye and Emmanuel Frémiet, directors of the Jardin des Plantes and themselves animal sculptors. From 1868 to 1914, Valton produced more than 70 animal models and was appointed professor of sculpture at the Germain Pilon school in Paris in 1883. He participated in numerous exhibitions
