It only took a few minutes, that is to say the time for the young boy to lose patience and return to play, for this artist (whose monogram remains to be identified) to sketch both the tenderness and the intelligence of this child. The artist's pencil studied in careful detail the profile, the gaze, the outline of the face of this child. The front portrait, which is the most completel, is perhaps the one that was used later for a painted work.
This study sheet, considered here as an artwork on its own, reveals very fine drawing qualities as well as a beautifully modern composition. One might think of Lucien Simon, or perhaps one of his many disciples. One may also think of Jean Geoffroy, the painter of childhood, but the name of the artist escapes us for now. The delicacy of the drawing, as well as a certain glint in the child's eyes, which is difficult to explain, can also remind of a Russian portrait painter.
The drawing is sold as is, in sheet, and would certainly deserve a nice framing to magnify it more.
