"Medal: First Empire Marriage Of Napoleon I And Marie-louise Of Austria"
Medal commemorating the marriage of Napoleon the First and Marie-Louise de Habsbourg-Lorraine in 1810. Pewter coin, smooth edge, no hallmark. Obverse: contiguous busts of Napoleon and Marie-Louise in medallions surmounted by a crown, at the bottom in the center two flaming hearts. We can read in emphasis in the upper part: NAPOLEON KING OF THE FRENCH MARIE LOUISE HIS WIFE; in the lower part: MARIE LE 2 APRIL. Visible wear of text and decoration in bas relief, micro-shock and micro-scratches throughout. Reverse: two hands joined under a crown above a text that can be read with difficulty, dated at the bottom: 1810. Great general wear, especially on the reverse of this coin which is a little over two hundred years old. Here is the text I was able to find on the Internet: THESE AUGUSTUS SPOUSES, IN / FULFILLING ALL WISHES, / WILL BE PURE DAYS / IN THE CUSTODY OF THE GODS / AND THEIR UNION, OF THEIR / NOBLE ALLIANCE, / WILL RENAITRE A NEVER THE / HAPPINESS OF FRANCE. A bit of history (thank you Internet): After their civil union on April 1, Napoleon I religiously married, on April 2, 1810, in the Salon Carré du Louvre, Marie-Louise de Habsbourg-Lorraine, daughter of Emperor François I from Austria. This union marks a reversal of the French and Austrian alliances, by inaugurating a rapprochement desired by the two former enemies. Weight: 12.5 grams. Note: rare model despite its condition. I am offering a 19th century ebony box with a screw-on lid to protect this piece. Free delivery for mainland France. Price nonnegotiable.
