The canvas represents a young married couple wishing to have a painting evaluated by the art expert in their studio. The connoisseur sits on a comfortable armchair and holds in his hands the painting, the subject of which is hidden from the viewer, igniting a glimmer of mystery in his eyes, while the young people focus on explaining the subject of the painting. The room in which the work takes place is entirely decorated with paintings, with a decoration of inlays, typical of old aristocratic residences where entire rooms and long corridors with their high ceilings lent themselves to the most varied artistic productions. Examples of 19th century houses embellished in this way can still be seen today in the collection of Palazzo Borromeo on Isola Bella and Palazzo Colonna in Rome.
