"Johann B. Clarot (1798 Vienne - 1855 Pest) Two Boys On The The Capture Of Singing Birds"
Biedermeier's watercolor depicts two charming children (brothers) catching songbirds. It was executed in 1840 by the famous Austrian watercolorist, miniaturist and lithographer Johann Baptist Clarot (1798 Vienna - 1855 Budapest). He was the son of the engraver Joseph Clarot and the brother of another well-known Viennese portrait painter and miniaturist Alexandre Clarot (1796 -1842). On our watercolor the artist left his souvenir inscription: "Meinem Bruder Alexander gewidmet" (in English: "dedicated to my brother Alexander"). From this inscription it can be assumed that the author painted this watercolor in 1840 in memory of distant childhood years and represents himself and his older brother Alexander, who was 2 years older than the author. . In 1814-1824, Johann Baptist Clarot studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. After his studies he worked for different publishing houses in Vienna. In 1841 he moved to Pest (now Budapest), where he lived until his death.
