A student of Jean-Léon Gérôme, Eugène Deshayes exhibited in Algiers from 1890, then he traveled throughout North Africa.
He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français where he received an honorable mention in 1896. His works were very successful, especially his paintings of Algeria. He became the official painter of the Navy in 1910.
