History of the decor: Decor composed of 23 panels Son of a fisherman, orphan at 15, Jean-Julien Lemordant (1878-1968) manages to continue his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Rennes. Supported by his teachers, in 1892 he obtained a grant from the city of Rennes which allowed him to join the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1895. He attended the Bonnat workshop where he met Dufy, Braque and Othon Friesz. Talented, the young artist quickly found an original style. In 1901, during his military service, he discovered Quimper and the Penmarc'h region, where he settled in 1903. In 1905, he was commissioned to decorate the dining room of the Hôtel de l'Epée in Quimper. The large decor was produced between 1905 and 1909 and consists of twenty-three panels totaling sixty square meters relating to five major themes: the wind, forgiveness, seaweed and the sea, as well as a set representing the lighthouse. d'Eckmühl and the Notre-Dame-de-la-Joie chapel. In 1975, the famous Hôtel de l'Epée closed its doors. The dining room decor was bought at auction by the museum in 1976. Due to lack of space, only one painting, Contre le vent, was presented to the public. Restructuring work on the museum in 1993 made it possible to reconstruct this decor identically. Lemordant synthetically evokes the daily life of the Bigoudens. His work constitutes a true hymn to these latter who resist the force of the elements in a hostile nature. The painter, thanks to the intensity of the colors and the dynamism of the lines, presents a living and modern Brittany. http://www.mbaq.fr/fr/nos-collections/peintures-d-inspiration-bretonne/lemordant-decor-pour-l-hotel-de-l-epee-a-quimper-519.html Biography of the artist: 1878 - 1968 Painter After having followed the teaching of the School of Fine Arts in Rennes, Jean-Julien Lemordant continued his training at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, in the studio of Léon Bonnat .
