"Exceptional Ceremonial Buffet In Rio Rosewood And Sycamore, Attributed To J. Leleu - 1940"
Astonishing Buffet d'Apparat, designed in the Art Deco spirit, attributed to the famous French designer and designer Jules Leleu (1883-1961). It opens on the top and on the front by a double flap revealing a remarkable interior in Sycamore garnished with original Mercury Mirrors. This space is made up of a recessed concave part and two small side drawers, embellished with Amaranth threads. It is also equipped with brass Galleries, initially used as storage for glasses, and which make it possible to imagine a bar function for this unclassifiable piece of furniture. Underneath, this sideboard is made up of two movement doors, inlaid with diamonds in various colors on a background of Rio rosewood. Floral motifs in mother-of-pearl and various woods also adorn these doors, underlined - just like the front flap - by two lemon tree nets with sinuous lines forming frames. The interior of this lower part offers a central niche and, on both sides, storage compartmentalized by shelves adorned with friezes on their visible edges. Two strong columns narrowed down constitute the front uprights of this unusual piece of furniture. They are crowned with brass rings and end with ornate feet with plates of the same alloy. It will be noted that the sides are appreciably flared towards the rear and that the low cross member is slightly scalloped. The flap, as well as the doors, are locked and the cabinet is supplied with an additional key. This sumptuous sideboard is both unique and perfectly in line with current trends. It has benefited from prestigious design work and unalterable precious woods, which were the materials of choice for Jules Leleu, since he was an expert in the fitting out of Paquebots in the last century.
