Edmond Charles Joseph Yon (1841-1897) was a French landscape painter, draughtsman and engraver, friend of artists among the most loyal to nature such as Théodore Rousseau, Camille Corot, Jules Dupré as well as Charles-François and Karl Daubigny.

Like them, he loved to settle in the landscapes of France to reveal the beauty that appears every day.
The details of the painting, so meticulous, invite both contemplation and a form of walk in the painting. It is absolutely charming. We look at the roofs, so elegantly painted, the bursts of color in the flowerbed, the road made of dirt. We can guess the quiet murmur of the Seine, the patience of the horse, the cart whose wood gently creaks. There are passers-by in the distance, a few strollers who live here and who nevertheless continue to watch the river and its incessant movements.

From the shore, they are also certainly looking at the Triboulet, this yacht on which Edmond Yon spent the summer of 1887 sailing along the Seine, between Poissy and Rouen, at the invitation of one of his friends. This information is given by the painter and art critic Émile Michel, in the introduction to the catalog of the sale entirely devoted to Edmond Yon, which took place at the Hôtel Drouot on April 27, 1888. Our painting appears as number 25 of this catalog, as confirmed by the handwritten label on the back of the work (see photographs).

He writes : Thanks to the Triboulet, the artist was able to choose the best places, to take up a position at his ease, to go from one bank to the other if necessary, and without fear of the rural policeman, the enemy of the landscapers, to plant his easel on the edges. in the right places. […] Yon excels at composing his paintings in the very presence of nature, choosing among the elements that surround him those which best express the character of a site and give it its true meaning.

We can now imagine the floating studio and Edmond Yon, taking the time to paint this landscape to reveal its calm splendor, simply by looking at the sky, the flowers, the water and the passers-by.
The banks of the Seine at Rangiport have also inspired landscape painters such as Karl Daubigny, Hippolyte-Camille Delpy, Charles Quinet and Gustave Poetzsch.

In Paris, the paintings of Edmond Yon are kept in the musée Carnavalet and musée d'Orsay. In other parts of France, his paintings can be seen in the collections of the museums of Lille, Brest, Bordeaux and Auxerre.
Some remarkables price results in sales at Christie's and Artcurial, most notably, in coherence with the quality of his paintings.

This work is perfectly painted and very well preserved.
A landscape drawn in charcoal by Edmond yon is also available on my gallery.

April 2022 : Discovery of the reproduction of our painting, engraved by Edmond Yon himself and published in the French newspaper l'Univers illustré, on 21st April 1888 (p.252, see photograph). This publication confirms, if need be, both the authenticity and the date of this oil on canvas.
