Charles Olivier DE PENNE (1831-1897) Set of three drawings in a frame: A cow and her calf A Béarnaise cow A Bariton bull Watercolor, pencil and white highlights Good general condition, foxing 27 x 43.5 cm (at sight) 40.5 x 57 cm (with frame) _ Charles-Olivier de Penne (1831-1897) French painter and illustrator, known as a painter of history, landscape and especially as an animal painter Attached to the School of Barbizon Training in Fine Arts, he enters the studios of Léon Cognet, who was also the master of Rosa Bonheur and Edgar Degas. He won his first prizes thanks to history painting, a discipline he practiced for a short time. Then he met Charles Jacque, engraver and animal painter, who took him to Barbizon and encouraged him to become an animal painter himself. There, he frequented the Auberge de Ganne and established relationships with the painters of this school who influenced him to the practice of after-life and outdoor representation. It was then that Charles de Penne devoted himself to painting landscapes, hunting and animals. In the 1870s, he acquired a good reputation and established himself as a painter of hunting and dogs. He showed his affection for animals and knowledge of their character through his works. He is exhibited in several Parisian museums, many of his works are now at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
