An intimate portrait, which brings to mind the elegance and the modernity of Jules Pascin, Foujita and Raoul Dufy, all friends of the artist.

In the introduction to the 1976 Chas Laborde exhibition in Paris, where our painting was presented under n°19, a quote from French writer Pierre Mac Orlan, one of the artist's closest friends, recalled some very interesting memories : Chas barely ever talked about his work. He hesitated a long time before showing us his paintings. Often, I would accompany him to his studio on rue Lamarck where, among other delicate objects such as English earthernware, some paintings of ravishing grace would be somehow hidden. The inspiration behind them was all at once tender, sensual and satyrical. [...] Women didn't wear masks when, without knowing, they were the models for Laborde, either in the setting of a quiet garden in Spring or somewhere along the streets of Montmartre.

It is a pleasure, simply imagining this atmosphere of intimacy inside Chas Laborde's studio. This intimacy in which this portrait was painted. In the exhibition catalog, our painting is entitled "Femme rousse". Indeed, it is the portrait of a red-haired woman, but there is so much more to say, about the painting, about her.
