Object description :

"Golden Afghan Rug, Circa 1950, 135 Cm X 221 Cm, Wool On Wool, Afghanistan, Very Good Condition"
Carpet called "golden Afghan" around 1950, originating from the Akcha region, in Afghanistan and knotted by the indigenous tribes of this region, measuring 135 cm x 221 cm long. In wool on wool, mainly goat hair and sheep wool, this rug is decorated with the guls, or coats of arms of the tribe that lives in this region.
The decor of four octagons each decorated with patterns specific to each tribe, and fairly wide borders very ornately decorated with crosses and foliage is specific to them.
Between the octagons, motifs in the form of stylized flowers.
We are in the presence of an already old carpet whose harmonious gold colors enchant silky wool.
The presence of very slight wear, an old carpet cannot be otherwise !!!
the pile is flush and this rug has a nice patina due to its age and slight discolorations throughout which give it an unmistakable style and what we call "abrash" barely visible on this piece.
Afghan handicrafts are of very good quality. In other regions, nomadic rugs are often loosely knotted and have a long pile, unlike Afghan or Turkmen rugs which have dense and tight knots due to the Persian knot, velvet strokes, and goats or sheep's hair. sheep's wool, supple and shiny.
But the use of goat hair is more common for warp and weft.
These carpets have a masculine aura and have always been appreciated since the 19th century for decorating the offices of businessmen.
These majestic carpets are certainly the best in Central Asia and are the work of the Afghan tribes.
The same spirit of knotting and pattern is found in the neighboring carpets from Turkmenistan belonging to the Tekke tribe, generally called Bukhara-Tekke, but the old production consists of smaller carpets, due to the distance that separates them from Central Asia and foreign markets.
This carpet is in very good condition.
