Marcel Delaris, born in Elne (Pyrénées-Orientales) on July 13, 1911 and died in Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales) in August 1995 is a French painter. Marcel Delaris entered the National School of Fine Arts2 in Paris in 1929 (after having studied Arts Deco in 1928). At the Beaux Arts, he joined the engraving workshop of André Devambez, which, he said, influenced his style for the rest of his life. At the National School of Fine Arts, Marcel Delaris competed three years in a row at the Grand Prix de Rome and was "in the box" among the first 9. On this occasion, he painted the painting "Ulysses and Calypso" a youthful work that he probably "covered" later with another painting. After the Fine Arts, received as a drawing professor, Marcel Delaris was appointed to the Lycée d'Aurillac where he taught until the War. Marcel Delaris did his military service in Bastia, Corsica (1932-33), where he produced numerous gouaches and paintings. Mobilized in September 1939, Corporal Marcel Delaris was taken prisoner in May 19403 and spent nearly four years in captivity in Germany (1940-1943). He brought back a series of works on paper, drawings and gouaches which were the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Musée d'Elne, which has several of his works. After the war, Marcel Delaris worked as a drawing teacher at the Lycée François-Arago in Perpignan. He spent his entire career there until his retirement in the early 1970s. A tireless artist, he continued to produce until his death in August 1995 in Perpignan. His very prolific work has been deployed in a variety of styles, techniques and supports: charcoal, oil, pastel, watercolour, gouache, Indian ink, ceramics... posters, decorations, tapestries, stones and painted wood... Excelling in the production of landscapes, Marcel Delaris was also a much sought-after portraitist throughout his career. His oil paintings and watercolors are classically crafted, taking their inspiration from scenes of everyday life, notably from his native Roussillon, such as net menders in Collioure, as well as from bucolic landscapes. For a time, he departed from the initial academicism to move towards a more expressionist style (cf. “students drawing”, Terrus Elne Museum).
