"Ainu, Polychrome Wood Japan Edo/meiji 19th Century"
The polychrome wooden sculpture probably represents an Ainu, the original inhabitant of northern Japan. In art, the Ainu are usually depicted as menacing and strange figures, with severe facial features different from those of the typical Japanese. The man is portrayed with a healthy dose of naturalism combined with stylization. Japan, Edo/Meiji period, 19th century. Height 48 cm (with base 55 cm), width 19 cm, depth 12 cm.
