"Ascetic Buddha, Japan, Edo/meiji Period, 19th Century."
The wooden sculpture probably depicts Shakyamuni Buddha. An extremely precise and graceful work, which is reflected in the character's face, hair and dresses. When the Buddha left his home and began to wander the land, he first tried an ascetic life, and this period is probably mentioned in the depiction. After a while, the Buddha realized that excessive hunger was preventing him from concentrating, and after several days he had his first meal. The legend also says that one day the Buddha heard a musician give instructions to his disciple: "If you tighten the string too much - it breaks, if it is too weak - it produces no sound". He abandons ascetic practices and begins to eat normally, but in moderation. Japan, Edo/Meiji period, 19th century. Height 43 cm, width 23 cm, length 12 cm.
