"Rare GÃschÃn Somali Shield"
"Gãschãn" Somali shield, from East Africa (the Somalis straddle several countries including Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti), tanned and engraved oryx skin, 49 in diameter X 11 cm in height depth. Unlike many of their African counterparts, these shields have a light patina of undyed or even bleached leather (see the example in the Barbier-Mueller collection) and characteristic skin engravings.
