"Pair Of Sconces From Maison Charles"
Pair of gilt brass sconces from Maison Charles with medal patina, with their original wax sheaths. Ready to be installed. Height 30 cm, width 27.5 cm. Maison Charles has contributed to the renown of French lighting throughout the world by being the supplier of the greatest royal palaces, ministries, embassies and palaces. Installed in the former Christofle factories in Saint Denis, it perpetuates an unequaled know-how in the great tradition of the French Master Bronziers. Initially, in 1908, CHARLES, directed by Artisans d'Art, specialized in bronze reproduction, when Emile-Albert CHARLES was joined by his 2 sons, Jean CHARLES, Major of the BOULLE school, interior architecture section and sculpture, and Jacques CHARLES, a graduate of Applied Arts in Interior Architecture. In the 1950s, the house produced lights with unusual shapes for the time. We can cite, for example, Pineapple lamps, lamps in the shape of an ear of corn or even in the shape of a pine cone. Constantly wanting to broaden its horizons while respecting the spirit of the house, the "Inox Collection" was offered in 1965. At that time, this collection took on an avant-garde air and it was to be a great success and demonstrate a profession where most of the production is devoted to the reissue of old models. In 1971, Chrystiane CHARLES, wife of Jean, Gold Medalist from the National School of Fine Arts, Sculpture section, then took up the torch of the family business. CEO and Artistic Director of the company, Chrystiane CHARLES then created the collection "CHARLES sculpts light", signed and numbered sculpture lamps of contemporary expression and inspired by nature. Its popularity, CHARLES also owes it to its strategy of collaboration with the great creators: the sculptor Arman, Didier La Mache, Jacques Pierrejean, Christian Duc, Sylvain Dubuisson, Martine Bedin, Jean Charles de Castelbajac, Yamo... Each model is considered as a sculpture, a unique piece made entirely by hand and to order, by a team of highly qualified craftsmen”. In 2001 the house changed hands and Michael Wagner, a former member of Hermès, took over the presidency. She collaborates today with the greatest international designers, decorators and architects such as Philippe Starck, Jacques Garcia, Jacques Grange or Alberto Pinto. See Proantic Magazine
