"Albert Felix Schmitt : "landscape Of The Pyrenees""
Albert Félix Schmitt (1873-1953) : “Landscape in the Pyrenees”, oil on canvas 50 X 61 cm mounted in a gilt frame with inverted slope 60 X 71 cm. Signed Della Tore Alta surrounding a marquis' crown at the bottom right, countersigned Schmitt on the back, circa 1930. What was our astonishment to find works by this eminent member of the Boston School of the early 20th century, including one retrospective took place just 101 years ago in the Boston Art Club Galleries?!! By pushing our research, we discovered that he lived for a long time in Biarritz where he had his residence not far from the Hôtel du Palais and where he died, finding his subjects in his entourage and in the landscapes of his adopted region. I don't know where he got this title of Italian Marquis, but he has it on several other paintings that we have. Here, this plain at the foot of the Pyrenees, treated in this technique so characteristic of the 1920s and 1930s, bordering on the surrealism of Roerich or Georgia O'Keeffe, seems to be waiting for who knows what...
