"Pair Of Earthenware And Bronze Vases, By E. Gilles - 2nd Half Of The Nineteenth"
Set of two vases with mirror decorations, by Edouard Gilles (1868-1895), a porcelain painter by training, who created his own pottery workshop in Paris at the end of the 19th century. On a brown background with pretty shades, two imaginary creatures in relief confront each other, or move away from each other, depending on how you choose to arrange these vases. The combination of lions' bodies with eagles' wings and beaks evokes griffins, dominating among golden decorations evenly distributed over the two vases. The latter are also embellished with grooved collars and rest on an ornate bronze base. Another touch of originality: a pretty water green inside these very decorative objects, monogrammed on the underside. Perfectly adapted to a contemporary atmosphere, these vases also remind us of ancient cultures, with these two protective monsters, combining the terrestrial strength of the beast and the celestial energy of the raptor. ******** Period: 2nd half of the 19th century Excellent condition.
