"Gemini - Jean-pierre Maury (1932 - 2021)"
This strange and disturbing relief is by Jean-pierre Maury (1932 - 2021); artist, singer, and decorated his cabaret located rue Saint Jaques in Paris ("the Port of Salvation" 1955-82). Friend of Prévert, the establishment quickly became a famous address. There began: Barbara, Georges Moustaki, Gainsbourg, Jean Ferrat, Pierre Perret, Boby Lapointe, Coluche...(He made hundreds of casts of artists' faces, kept at the Musée de l'Homme). He was part of the Surrealists group. André Breton dismissed him in 1964 because of misunderstandings between the artists.
The inspiration for these works is that of Alchemical symbolism, in constant connection with the four elements and seven so-called "elementary" metals. He expresses the duality of the world by opposing in turn the Sun and the Moon, the masculine and the feminine, Good and Evil, in an erotic and provocative Rabelaisian universe. (Many of Maury's works were exhibited at the Museum of Eroticism in Paris).
His slender, dark style, characters fixed on disjointed wooden boards is recognizable.
