This patinated bronze sculpture represents one of the seven gods of happiness, namely Fukurokuju, with a crane. The long-skulled sage characteristic of Japanese mythology is the god of wisdom, longevity and happiness. He holds a cane in one hand and a snail in the other. The sculpture was made with great charm and attention to detail. In China, the crane is a traditional symbol of longevity as well as happy and lasting relationships. Cast bronze, hand chiselled, polished and patinated. Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912). Signed on the back: probably "Daimei zo" meaning "made by Damei". Height 33 cm (without base 30 cm), width 30 cm.
