"Child Buddha, Vietnam, 18th/19th Century"
The sculpture representing the child Buddha Shakyamuni is made of lacquered and gilded wood. His left hand points to the sky, while his right hand points to the earth. Sculptures depicting the Child Buddha were present in Chinese art from the Ming dynasty, as well as in the art of neighboring Vietnam. The distinctive colors of lacquer and gilding. and the shape of the base of the lotus attest to its Vietnamese origin. The sculpture has a strong symbolic expression. According to legend, after his birth, Prince Siddartha took seven steps, and at each place he walked, a lotus flower grew. Vietnam, Lê dynasty / Nguyen dynasty, 18th/19th century.
