Object description :

"Catalan Romanesque Head - First Half Of The XIIth Century"
This extremely rare Romanesque limestone head is similar in its graphics and minimalism to Catalan sculpted works from the first half of the 12th century. His shield-shaped face with full pulpits, enhanced by high cheekbones, protruding ears and marked by a strong nose and chin, evoke those of the human figures that adorn the capitals of the very famous cloister of Cuxa, preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of New- York (25.120.617). Their small almond-shaped eyes underlined by a mandorla overlap perfectly with those of our figure, which must also once have adorned in relief a capital or another Romanesque architectural element from the same region.
