"Exceptional Syrian Ceremonial Set, In Walnut And Inlaid Decorations - Late Nineteenth"
Magnificent Syrian Set, consisting of a Middle Table and a Ceremonial Armchair. These two elements are almost entirely covered with inlays of Bone and Mother-of-Pearl, Ebony in strips and Lemon tree in fillets. These Decorations made with great finesse and a taste for detail represent various motifs, such as foliage, floral or geometric friezes, sometimes circular. The Table is made up of a rectangular top with a cut-out wooden Gallery on the underside. This top is supported by four pillars with octagonal sides joined in pairs on a raised plinth. All offer alternating Bone and Walnut inlays forming different Decors from one foot to another while maintaining the same shades. These four supports are crowned with flared and sculpted capitals and finished with eight-sided molded bases. This base rests on a second top, smaller than the first, also featuring numerous friezes and arabesques. The Armchair, just as richly Decorated, offers a wide backrest, with a round cutout at the top, as if to materialize the space allocated to the head of its occupant. The sides are formed by two rectangles positioned vertically and also topped with more modest circular elements. Historically a symbol of power in Ancient Rome, this Curule seat is by definition based on an X-shaped base. It is made up of two times five curved square-section cleats, crossing under the seat and extending beyond it to serve as supports at the armrests. This Set of Apparatus has benefited from a meticulous restoration, for a rendering that arouses admiration. Very decorative, it will seduce fans of Oriental Art or will strike a chord with lovers of unusual antiques.
