"aurora" By Guido Reni (bologna 1575-1642)

Oil on panel from the mid-17th century painted by a talented painter from central Italy and reproducing the central fresco on the ceiling of the Casino dell'Aurora Pallavicini in Rome and executed by Reni in 1614.
Reni imagined the sun rising from the sea Against the backdrop of a sky that is still cloudy and nocturnal, Aurora, the first character from the right, hovers in the sky carrying in each hand a garland of roses alluding to the color of the sky at dawn.
The putto immediately behind her is Phosphorus, the first morning star, carrying a torch that represents the coming of light. A chariot drawn by four spirited horses with differently colored coats follows, indicating the different degrees of light that precede the appearance of the Sun; he is guided by Elio, brother of Aurore and personification of the sun, here assimilated to Apollo, god of light. The quadriga is surrounded by a group of dancers who can be identified with the Hours.

The scene is completely reversed from the original, in fact, the best way to appreciate this fresco is to stand below and look at it with a mirror, as the skilful painter who painted it certainly did. brought back to this beautiful walnut table. .

The table measures 38cm high x 95cm long, its contemporary Salvador Rosa frame is original and measures 53cm x 108cm long.
