Jean Henri CLESS Strasbourg, 1774 - 1812, Strasbourg "Woman in a white dress in an interior with a harp" Oil on canvas, 53.5x41cm 1810 Signed lower left Biography: Pupil of Jacques-Louis David, he began to be active around 1800 and exhibited in Paris at the Salons from 1804 to 1808. According to the Thieme-Becker artistic dictionary, he returned to Alsace in 1811, where many private collections hold his works. Cless was also a draftsman and miniaturist. Various works preserved in museums: - The Cabinet of Prints and Drawings preserves six drawings and 3 miniature portraits. - Paris, Carnavalet museum, a drawing [archive] representing An artist's studio in 1804, called "David's studio", Pencil, ink wash and pen, 46.2 × 58.2 cm. The drawing in the Musée Carnavalet is the artist's best-known work. This drawing was acquired by the museum in 1900 from M. Bernard. In 1982, it was presented during the exhibition: La Révolution française, Le Premier Empire, Dessins du musée Carnavalet, catalog no. top hat, recognizable by the tumor deforming his left cheek.
