Renée Jullien (1903-1999), Léré, Cameroon, 1950, gouache, 47.5 x 31 cm. Gouache signed lower right. Born in Paris, Renée Jullien joined the School of Fine Arts at a very young age. In 1923, she was the first woman to win the second Grand Prix de Rome. The following year she traveled to Indochina and Chrine thanks to a state scholarship. Renée Jullien moved to Aix-en-Provence in 1940, the landscapes she discovered became a source of inspiration. She opened a sculpture workshop at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts at the request of Marcel Arnaud.
