Biography :
Lydia Herrick-Hodge (1886-1960) was an American sculptor. She arrived in Oregon in 1922 when her husband, renowned geologist Edwin T. Hodge accepted an appointment at the University of Oregon. In 1927, she earned an art degree from the University of Oregon.
In 1935, Herrick-Hodge brought together former students of the University of Oregon to create an Art League and went on to establish the Oregon Ceramic Studio in 1937. Built with funding from the WPA (Work Projects Administration) to support the crisis, the studio managed by volunteers then offered a place for exhibitions, art sales, educational programs. Nationally recognized as a major craft center, the studio also supplied the largest kiln on the West Coast.
