"Linked to a spiritual search: the reduction here corresponds to a stripping. The gaps of light are a kind of divine interstices, as Malraux understood it: "the only domain where the divine is visible is art". It is an expression of the spirit, an immaterial quest, which links art and introspection, as for Nemours, Kupka or Mondrian, or for colorfield painters like Rothko and Newman.
