"Louis Edouard Cauvin (1816-1900) Lunch On The Grass In The Haut Var"
The serenity and calm of bucolic life in Provence in the 19th century. The work produced by Louis Edouard Cauvin, one of Toulon's masters of landscape and marine art in the 19th century, is offered in a beautiful frame with a degilded patina, in the Louis XIV style by the framer Roger Gault (RG), which measures 87 cm by 102 cm, and 65 cm by 81 without the frame. Some normal use cracks for a work of this period, it was restored and relined a few years ago. It is signed lower left. Louis Cauvin was a pupil of his parent Vincent Courdouan and made his debut at the Paris Salon of 1839 with a series of watercolors representing landscapes from North Africa or the Orient: View of a camp on the road from Bône to Constantine, Market in Constantine, View of the Drehan camp. He exhibited there until 1878, devoting himself mainly to the representation of Provençal landscapes and seascapes. He succeeds Bernard Sénéquier as drawing teacher at the School of Navigation in Toulon, where he was the last teacher, based in rue Hipolyte Duprat, in the premises of the former foundry. By decree of February 5, 1875, he was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
