Object description :

"Atypical Asian Cabinet Furniture, Vietnam Origin, In Solid Mahogany - Late Nineteenth"
Cabinet furniture of Vietnamese origin in solid mahogany, lavishly decorated with Oriental sculptures. In one piece, it consists of several storage spaces and in particular two columns of niches on the sides. The first, on the left, 37 cm x 37 cm wide, consists of three display compartments, while the second, on the right, set back and narrower (27 cm x 27 cm), offers four. Each of these niches is embellished in the upper part with carved Mahogany friezes. This astonishing Cabinet opens with two doors: a first, at the bottom, with a facade decorated with farmyard birds pecking in the shelter of bamboos, reveals a bare space 50 cm high. A second, in the central part, reveals three 33.5 cm deep shelves, placed on racks and therefore adjustable as desired over a total height of 101 cm. It sports on its visible side a generous Dragon Decor, seeming to intertwine a tree cut in the Japanese style. These two leaves have their contours underlined by sculpted friezes forming frames and they are equipped with two discreet pull handles almost indistinct from the rest of the furniture. The largest of these doors is surmounted by a decorative panel representing a bird placed on a branch of blooming roses and in buds. This singular piece of furniture also consists of two drawers, each 9 cm deep, with fronts decorated with protruding bouquets of flowers, two of them serving as concealed handles. The left side of this Cabinet is decorated, under the column, with a new scene of birds and foliage, reminiscent of the one described above. The pediment is an important reptilian imaginary creature, typically Asian, a culture also recalled by the Pagoda roof cutouts on either side of the columns. The whole rests on a wide fretted crosspiece, richly embellished with plant sculptures, itself set on six feet carved into windings.
