Biography:
Henri-Alfred Jacquemart (1824-1896) was a French sculptor who distinguished himself in animal sculpture. He studied sculpture in 1845 at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He regularly presented works at the Salon, from 1847 to 1879. He traveled to Egypt and Turkey, countries which became for him a source of inspiration.
Jacquemart was one of the sculptors, who with others like Pierre-Louis Rouillard, Pierre-Jules Mêne and especially Antoine-Louis Barye, in the second half of the 19th century, took advantage of the new enthusiasm of the bourgeoisie for the sculptures of furnishings, particularly animal sculptures, and the spectacular development of this market supported by the many art foundries which had their heyday in France at that time.
