In the foreground characters: a merchant accompanied by a dog, a boatman with his back to a sail are framed by an idealized pastoral landscape. 
In the center of the painting: boats and sailboats revealing in the distance a luminous Mediterranean port whose buildings, forts and ramparts are lost in the landscape. 
The composition remains very classical, recalling the followers of Claude Gellée, known as the Lorrain, as well as landscape genre painting in 17th century Italy. 
An oval stamp of a canvas merchant located in Marseille is present at the back of the canvas.
