"Nicolas-rené Jollain, 1732-1804"
Nicolas-René JOLLAIN, dit le Jeune (Paris, 1732-1804) belongs to a family of artists which includes the painter to the king Nicolas-René Jollain, dit le Vieux, to whom the famous portrait of King Louis XIV is attributed. His family includes among others Pierre Jollain, also a painter, as well as designers and engravers. Nicolas-René then enters the studio of Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre: the student and the master will remain close. Second at the Prix de Rome in 1754, behind Jean-Pierre Chardin, son of the painter Jean Siméon Chardin. NR Jollain was approved at the Academy in 1765 and received in 1773 with Le Charitable Samaritain (Paris, Saint-Nicolas du Chardonnet church) as a reception piece. A specialist in great history painting, he took part in several major decorative projects, including those of the Château de Bellevue and the Petit Trianon for which he executed several canvases and was present at the Salon from 1767. This painting, "Diana and her nymphs au bain", oil on canvas in good condition and large, height: 81 cm L: 100 cm, was appraised and stamped on the back on the wooden frame by the Turquin firm, 69 Rue Sainte-Anne in Paris.
