Biography of JOSEP BUSUETES Y ODENA (1914-1998) Josep Busquets is a Catalan sculptor who studied in Valls. Like many young people of his generation, he was enlisted in the Republican army to take part in the civil war, he then returned to Valls to continue his work as a sculptor. In 1943, he presented his first exhibition in Barcelona which was hailed by critics. In 1945, he exhibited at the Reig Gallery in Barcelona and founded with other sculptors the Maillol circle at the French Institute in Barcelona. In 1953, he obtained the Julio Antonio medal from the Province of Tarragona. In 1953, he exhibited in Madrid and was a great success. Busquetes' sculptures have the female figure as their subject, they are compact, strong and respond to the idea of a woman of the earth, with massive arms and feet, a firm chest. There is also a certain form of primitivism or archaism in his sculptures, particularly in the treatment of the eyes and the hair. There are many outdoor sculptures in Valls, the two most important being the altarpiece of the Church of San Juan on which he worked for 7 years and the monument to the riders Xiquets de Valls.
