André Maire learned drawing Place des Vosges where he met Emile Bernard who would become his father-in-law. He went through the André Devambez workshop, the National School of Fine Arts and the Grande Chaumière where he notably met Roger Nivelt. Throughout his life he traveled through Africa but especially in Asia which he will survey for 10 years and where he will be a drawing teacher in Hanoi that will forge his line. His work from Indochina is particularly sought after for its colors inspired by the Venetian mannerism which influenced him throughout his life.
