"Important Bronze “ondine” By M. Moreau – Mid 19th Century"
Superb bronze with brown patina by Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) also known as "Dragonfly" representing a young woman appearing Ondine, the goddess of the waters. Sitting on a rock surrounded by reeds, a jug at her feet pouring perpetually flowing water, the nymph gazes down at the ground, her head gently tilted, seeming to wonder and be lost in thought. His gesture is graceful. She is naked under a light veil hanging from her small decorated wings and sketches a smile on her soft face highlighted by her elegantly raised curly hair. This refined bronze bears the artist's signature “Math. Moreau” and rests on a rotating base. On a plate in front, we can read: "Ondine, by M. Moreau, Hors Concours, Member of the Jury". Mathurin Moreau is a renowned French sculptor, renowned for his depictions of feminine grace and delicacy. He attended the Beaux Arts in Paris in 1841 and won the second Prix de Rome in 1842. Due to its size and refinement, this splendid bronze illustrating the beauty of the female body, will also seduce you with the poetry that emanates from it.
