The famous iron pillar of Chaudragupta II in Delhi proves that already in the 5th century, the Indians knew how to melt masses of iron larger than those that any European foundry could have processed before the second half of the 19th century.
Note, it is curious that this pillar, exposed to bad weather, has never been affected by rust and that the inscriptions are as clear as when they were engraved.
