"A Louis XVI Giltwood Console 18th Century Circa 1780."
Important console table with four legs of rectangular shape in molded lime wood, carved, openwork and gilded with marble entablature. The belt is carved on three sides. Its decoration is as elegant as it is homogeneous and consists of large and opulent lines of lakes lying in the Greek style with finely cut grooves. The main crosspiece is embellished in its middle part with a projecting projection forming a bas-de-lampe. This is adorned with purely neoclassical carved attributes such as laurel garlands, undulating ribbons and trimmings. Rectangular vertical connecting dice extend the visual harmony by unifying the belt and base. The latter is made up of four tapered legs with deep flutes, strangled at their pinched tops at their bases. The upper part of each of them is sculpted with a delicate decoration of water leaves and acanthus. The connection between the base and the belt is ensured by vertical rectangular connection dices centered on fleurons. The whole is topped by a white marble leaf with sharp sides where a groove molding runs along the frame. It is worth noting the great care taken with the connecting elements of impeccable quality. Balance, nervousness, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this console very representative of the so-called neoclassical period. We find all the beautiful ornaments as elegant as refined of this period strongly influenced by the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii which influenced the decorative arts of the reign of Louis XVI.
