Charles Arthur Bourgeois (1838-1886)
Dead at the age of 48, Charles-Arthur Bourgeois nonetheless had a busy career, although little informed by art criticism. In 1862, he won, even before his Prix de Rome, the prize "for the head of expression", awarded to his students by the School of Fine Arts for "The Resignation". The first work he presented at the Salon de Society of Living Artists, in 1863, won a Third Class medal, abandoning for this work the academic and romantic style that he would follow for the whole of his career (except for "the Arab Washer" which he presented at the Salon of 1868, and a "Slave Salon" of 1873 and Universal Exhibition of 1892), he gave in to the very fashionable trend of the Orientalist current with a "Snake Charmer" in plaster. Success earned him, from July 17, 1863 , commissioned by the Minister of the Household of the Emperor and Fine Arts. It is a monumental version of two meters of the Snake Charmer. In 1868, this statue is placed in the perimeter of the Menagerie of the Gardens des Plantes, near the Building of the Reptiles. In 1883, a no less monumental ninety is installed not far from there. Success never denied, "the Snake Charmer" is published in large numbers and established the notoriety of the artist. Other works, commissioned by the Prefecture of the Seine, by the State or acquired by it adorn the chapel of the Sorbonne, the church of Saint-Laurent, the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, but also the cathedral of Besançon and Brussels. The 19th century is the golden age of sculpture and sculptors. Paris takes shape, embellishes and the squares, gardens, buildings, monuments are adorned with decorations in bas-reliefs or in the round. Charles Arthur Bourgeois is one of the many sculptors that this century has produced. One of many, of course! But with such talent!
