"Four Optical Views Of Versailles And Marly, Eighteenth Century"
Four optical views, etchings, heightened with watercolour, second half of the 18th century. View of the Château de Marly, taken from the grand parterre; Palace of Versailles: theater scene and greenery in the gardens; Palace of Versailles: view of the great basin of Apollo and the Grand Canal; Facade of the Palace of Versailles with the chapel from the water parterre. Optical views are standard size images (about 23 x 40 cm) that travel throughout Europe via peddlers and printers. These perspectives are meant to be viewed through a device called a zograscope. Thus, the prints are seen in relief and perspective. Production extends to the 18th century and declines around 1790. Good state of preservation. Edged prints. Some small gaps and degraded angles. Four other views can be associated. Modern frame in gilded wood. Dimensions with frame (H x W): 32 x 48 cm
