Object description :

"Portrait Of Pope Clement XIV - XVIIIth"
Large oil on canvas from the 18th century representing Pope Clement XIV in bust, wearing the camauro, red cap edged with ermine, and dressed in the red velvet mosette edged with white ermine. On the ring finger of his right hand he wears the fisherman's ring. In the center of a frieze in the lower part, the papal coat of arms of Clement XIV is surmounted by a papal tiara placed at the top of the shield, the keys of Saint Peter placed in saltire. In the shield we find his personal elements, "Azure a fess Gules accompanied in chief by three stars Or set in fess and at the base of a mount with three peaks Or and the chief of the Franciscans: of azure with the two arms of carnation posed in saltire surmounted by a cross Sable”. Surrounding this coat of arms, one can read “Clement XIV – Pope of the order of Conventual Minors created on 19 November 1769”. We will notice the high quality of this painting which can be museum. We will notice, in addition to the face, his embroidered pastoral stole as well as the finesse with which the lace of his wrist was painted. This painting in very good condition has undergone a few small restorations, without repainting, and has been mounted on canvas to consolidate the old canvas. Contemporary frame with keys. Delft frame gilded with gold leaf, plate slightly visible on the reliefs. Dimensions of the canvas 81x60 cm Dimensions of the frame 105x83 cm. Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio (in religion Lorenzo) Ganganelli, born October 31, 1705 in Santarcangelo di Romagna, near Rimini, and died September 22, 1774 in Rome, was a priest of the Conventual Minor Friars, elected bishop of Rome to become the 249th pope of the Catholic Church on May 19, 1769 as Clement XIV (in Latin Clemens XIV, in Italian Clemente XIV). He is particularly known for having suppressed the Society of Jesus on July 21, 1773 and for having founded the Vatican Museums.
