Object description :

"Mahogany Empire Chair From The Chateau De Compiegne And The Elysée Palace"
Mahogany chair and mahogany veneer, tapered legs adorned with a collar of water leaves, the connecting dice trimmed with a carved rosette, the front legs in Etruscan saber. Parisian work from the end of the Empire period in the 1810s, attributed to Marcion. In addition to its aesthetic qualities, our chair is interesting for its Royal and Imperial historical origin since it bears the iron marks of the castle of Compiegne (crowned CP, and C1922 of the 1834 inventory, which indicates that our chair is originally from a set of six mahogany chairs left the castle in 1849, to join the Elysée Palace (then residence of Prince-President Louis Napoleon Bonaparte). The inventory numbers PR 6078 refer to the Presidency of the Republic. Our chair was then probably dispersed and removed from the collections of national furniture under the 3rd Republic in the years 1870-1880. Our chairs are typical of the productions of the Maison Jacob Desmalter for Imperial furniture. This company benefited from the protection of the Emperor, and it was she who supplied a good part of the very important furniture ordered for the Imperial and then Royal residences under the Restoration. rnished Imperial residences such as Fontainebleau, Compiègne, Trianon, our chair is attributable to Pierre-Benoit Marcion, one of the greatest cabinetmakers of the Empire with Jacob. Both shared the official orders for Imperial furniture to furnish the official buildings and apartments of court dignitaries. Marcion's furniture, well proportioned, is decorated with care, discretion and originality. He became, around 1805, one of Napoleon's main cabinetmakers for whom he made chests of drawers, consoles, secretaries, bookcases. He furnished the Petit Trianon, Fontainebleau, Saint Cloud, the Tuileries, but his main work remained the Empress Marie-Louise's bed executed in 1809 in gilded walnut, richly carved with swans, garlands and foliage. Le Garde Meuble will write, speaking of him, that "his furniture combines the perfect quality of the materials with the finish of the confection, the regularity of the proportions ... Monsieur Marcion is one of the cabinetmakers in Paris who has the furniture made with the utmost perfection. For this Empire seat of Imperial and Royal origin, we have implemented a national furniture quality restoration: seat unpinned, reassembled, re-varnished with a buffer, horsehair upholstery with a knife edge. For the cover, we were inspired by Jacob's chairs from the Château de la Malmaison: slate-coloured silk velvet, old stripes that we found (most likely woven with gold threads, given the color and quality). NB: we also offer a pair of chairs by Jacob for Louis Philippe at the Château de Bizy, restored with the same finishes, which can be continued with this chair. Excellent condition, our chair comes from the cabinetmaker and from the upholsterer. Width: 46cm Height: 89cm Seat height: 44cm
