Sketch: Pack of Gascon Saintongeois dogs
Oil on paper
24 x 32 cm
Signed lower left: Gabriel Süe 1917
Good condition - some accidents and tears on the edge.
After a start at the school of Charles Braquehaye in Bordeaux, Gabriel Süe trained in painting in Paris with Jean-Leon Gérôme then with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian. There he met Cézanne, with whom he became friends, and Steinlen who, seeing his cat drawings, advised him to move towards animal painting. A solitary painter, he traveled to Italy, Spain, Algeria and Tunisia. He likes wild life and paints packs in the middle of nature, as our little sketch illustrates.
